Influenced by authors such as Hubert Selby Jr., Henry Rollins, William S. Burroughs, and Kafka. This book is partitioned into three parts. Part one is written like a journal. It's about an unknown person of unknown gender and age writing about their isolation. Part two is inspired by writings of Henry Rollins in which it is comprised of entries. And part three is a compilation of letters.

This is supposed to be a diary but it more like a doorway, there should be a warning as you enter, instantly you get swept up in the inner turmoil and there is no relief. I found this really hard to put down, it made me feel guilty, it was like finding somebodies diary and sneakily reading it.

The book is influenced by Hubert Selby Jr., Henry Rollins and Charles Bukowski, if you are fans of then then check this out.

The book is split into 3 parts; part 1 is a diary of sorts, you get weekly updates on the authors life as he starts to spiral out of control. Large letters written on black pages make it even more stunning. Part 2 is a collection of musings, reminded me a lot of Bukowski, there are some really good bits in this part, there are also some shout outs to bands I have forgotten all about so I'll be hunting out their albums again. Part 3 is a collection of letters, it feels like the authors way of therapy , a way of getting his life in order.

This book is like a piece of art and you really need to get this in paperback just to fully appreciate it. I highly recommend this book and I eagerly await Waldo's next book.

Diary of a Compulsive Madness Waldo Austin 9781514602003 Books Reviews

This was a really good book by a new author. I felt anxious along with the character in part one. Part two and three were like reading someone's diary and learning all of their secrets. It was intriguing and sometimes very sad. If you are a fan of Hubert Selby Jr. you should pick up this book.
Waldo Austin’s first book is a collection of musings from inside the bell jar. Sad and often frightening; Diary of a Compulsive Madness is definitely not for the faint of heart. Written in an honest style using plain simple language, at times I was reminded of Kafka, Anais Nin, and even James O’Barr. Here we are given a raw glimpse of a man’s soul. I was instantly transported back to my twenties, when many a night was spent drunk and alone, save for my Joy Divison and Cure records. This is heavy stuff without much relief. One of my favorite passages reads
“I can bleed on demand. I can set myself on fire. I want to bleed for your sins…placed on top of the hill called Jesusland. Let me pull the nails from out of my palms, and climb down. Let me walk away alone with no disciples.”
With a promising debut, it will be interesting to see what Austin turns out next. As it stands, he’s created a work about man battling his greatest adversary –himself.
